The first game of their 2018-19 season a road trip to Hull Arena, Whitley Warriors will head out with the knowledge that they face a tough test against Jason Hewitt’s men, having endured four gruelling battles against the Pirates last season. First achieving a point from a 4-3 overtime loss on home ice last November, the Warriors then suffered an excruciating 11-0 defeat on the road one month later in which both right winger Bobby Chamberlain and left winger Matty Davies accomplished hat tricks. Keen to avoid a repeat of this encounter, which also saw Warriors Callum Watson and Ryan Sample punished for fighting, Whitley returned to Hull in January and competed closely with the Pirates to lose out narrowly by four goals to three. The Hillheads outfit then found themselves on the wrong side of another 4-3 score line the following evening, though this time the Warriors reaped the rewards of their hard work on home ice to force the Pirates into overtime, picking up a point for their efforts as a result. In consequence of this, Whitley will look to make their efforts count on Saturday, knowing that they have what it takes to at least challenge the Pirates as demonstrated in these previous close encounters with the side.

Having maintained most of last season’s roster, Hull Pirates have also acquired the services of Czech netminder Tomas Fucik and former Warrior Harry Harley who will surely set out to find the back of the net against his former club. Following these additions to what was an already incredibly strong squad, the Pirates will certainly be a force to be reckoned with as they set out on their quest for silverware following last season’s second place finish. Re-signing top points scorers Davies, Chamberlain and forward Lee Bonner over the summer, the trio having collectively achieved 226 points last season, Hull head out onto the ice with an abundance of firepower and will undoubtedly make life difficult for Whitley’s blue line on Saturday as a result. The Warriors, meanwhile, will aim to employ the skill of returning left winger Ben Campbell who brings Elite League experience to the team after playing for Newcastle Vipers and more recently, Guildford Flames. Also important for the Warriors will be Player-Coach David Longstaff who finished last season as Whitley’s top points scorer with 45 points from 35 league games whilst hardworking on ice leaders Dean Holland, Jordan Barnes and Sam Zajac will also strive to be extremely influential this weekend.

Whilst victory for the Pirates would see the outfit make a strong start to their league campaign as they look to contend with defending champions Sheffield Steeldogs and title contenders Telford Tigers for silverware this season, Whitley will be extremely pleased to take something from this encounter, knowing the difficult contest that lies ahead on Sunday evening.

After the disappointment of last season’s eighth place finish, Billingham Stars will set out to make amends in the first game of their 2018-19 campaign with a positive performance against Sheffield Steeldogs on Saturday. Set to take on Ben Morgan’s side for the first time this season, Billingham will aim to test the former EPL outfit having managed to achieve a point in overtime against Sheffield last season. Losing all four of their fixtures against the Steeldogs in their previous campaign, the Stars endured a 7-3 road defeat last September in which Sheffield’s Thomas Relf was ejected for elbowing. Two weeks later, Morgan’s men again triumphed over the Stars at Ice Sheffield, this time by seven goals to four; Billingham’s Alternate Captain Chris Sykes and Steeldogs’ Slovakian import Milan Kolena each scoring a brace. Shortly after this fixture, the Stars bounced back to prove difficult competition for Sheffield at home and were able to claw a point from a 4-3 overtime loss in a hotly contested game which saw the sides collectively accrue 160 penalty minutes between them. Disappointed to lose out to Kolena’s overtime winner, the Stars then sought to achieve their first victory over the Steeldogs in February but instead found themselves on the wrong end of a 5-1 score line with Player-Coach Michael Bowman the only man finding the target for the Teessiders. As such, Billingham will head out onto the ice on Saturday with the objective to achieve their first win over the Steeldogs having come so close to doing so in their previous campaign.

Re-signing the majority of their 2017-18 roster, with top points scorers Chris Sykes, Michael Elder and James Moss returning to play another season at the club after collectively notching 71 goals and 72 assists in their previous league campaign, the Stars will strive to cause problems for Sheffield’s defence, which includes Player-Coach Morgan, former Bracknell Bee ‘D’ man Relf, Captain Lewis Bell and blue liner Thomas Barry. Also looking to prove troublesome for their opposition will be new defenceman Edgar ProtĨenko who will work hard to dismantle Sheffield’s offensive play. Setting out to sabotage Billingham’s attempts to claim a victory, the defending champions will do all they can to ensure they maintain their excellent record against the Stars and, whilst Morgan’s men know that it will not be an easy trip to The Forum, the side will surely be disappointed with anything less than maximum points from this road trip.

Aiming for a victory to build their confidence, Billingham will seek to cause an upset in their search for two points whilst the Steeldogs will look to showcase their ability to challenge for the silverware from the first faceoff.

After their first road trip to Hull Arena on Saturday evening, Whitley Warriors will return to Hillheads on Sunday to take on Telford Tigers. Despite putting up a strong fight against Jason Silverthorn’s men last season, the Warriors have yet to record a win against the Shropshire side and will therefore face a great challenge in the first home contest of their campaign. In their initial encounter with the Tigers last October, the Warriors were able to shock the side with two goals from forward Ryan Sample, the first of which was scored in the second minute of the game. However, as Whitley’s discipline began to waver, their visitors were able to make the most of their power plays to claim both points with a 6-3 victory. Heavier road defeats of 7-0 and 8-0 then followed this result but the Warriors were again able to make life difficult for the Tigers in front of a home crowd; Whitley levelled the scoring after battling from 2-0 down before Telford’s winger Warren Tait fired home with just sixty eight seconds remaining in February’s meeting between the outfits. These games, together with Whitley’s 5-2 playoff loss to Telford at Hillheads, suggest that the Warriors will once again have to be prepared for a difficult clash, although David Longstaff’s men will also know that they have what it takes to test their visitors, having demonstrated their determination to challenge their opposition last season.

Once again, the Tigers boast a strong roster after re-signing several of last season’s squad over the summer, with outstanding netminder Denis Bell, experienced defenceman Jonathan Weaver and skilled forwards Scott McKenzie and Rick Plant amongst those returning to the club. With Telford’s average age currently twenty five years, Silverthorn has looked to once again establish a balance of youth and experience, with the former arising through youngsters Joseph Hazeldine, Jed Moreland and Brodie Jesson whilst the latter will be exhibited through the presence of Silverthorn, Weaver, Plant, McKenzie and of course, former Elite League left winger Doug Clarkson. Notably, Weaver returns to the club for a fifth consecutive campaign having accumulated 45 points in 23 games for Telford last season, a fantastic feat when taking into consideration his eleven-game ban following an incident in a cup fixture against Swindon Wildcats in September. Whilst Weaver will undoubtedly bring his strength and skill to Telford’s blue line, Whitley will also look to new signings Ben Campbell and Ross Connolly to make an impact whilst seeking the experience of long-serving Warriors DJ Good, Callum Watson and Martin Crammond for creativity and skill in front of the net. Collectively playing forty five seasons for their club, the trio continue to be highly effective and will no doubt demonstrate their ability this season.

With this game expected to be another captivating clash at Hillheads, the Warriors will head out with their sights set on their first victory against the former EPL outfit. Whilst a win for Longstaff’s line-up on Sunday would be an outstanding achievement, Telford will certainly set out to jeopardise any chance of success for the Warriors as they prepare to give everything in their quest for silverware this season.

Fixture:    Solihull Barons vs. Billingham Stars
Date:        2nd September 2018
Venue:     Hobs Moat Road

Visiting Hobs Moat Road for the first time this campaign, Billingham Stars will prepare for a challenge when they take on Daniel Brittle’s organised outfit on Sunday, having claimed just one point against the side last season. Playing the Barons on the road last December, Billingham found themselves two goals down ten minutes after faceoff and were unable to turn the tables on Solihull as a result, eventually losing 7-4. Striving to avenge this defeat against Brittle’s men in January, the Stars first played the side on home ice and gave their all after taking the lead just nineteen seconds into the game through forward James Moss but, in the end, the clash was pushed into overtime by the Barons who snatched a winner to ensure Billingham did not gain more than a single point. Following this game, the Stars travelled to Hobs Moat Road for a consecutive fixture against Brittle’s men but suffered a 5-1 defeat despite numerous power play opportunities. In consequence, Solihull were able to complete their four-game series against Billingham with a fourth victory, winning 8-5 at The Forum in spite of their poor discipline. Often a fiery contest, this one saw Solihull rack up 51 penalty minutes, with defenceman Dave Rogers punished for his fight with Stars’ forward Jack Emerson and netminder Josh Nicholls ejected from the game for a purported high sticks offence. With the Barons utilising their strength as well as their skill, these games proved difficult for the Stars and as such, the Teessiders must match the firepower and grit of their opposition if they are to succeed on Sunday evening.

Heading into this game, Billingham will deploy their usual points scoring forwards Chris Sykes, Michael Elder, James Moss and Callum Davies and, as the side will be without Canadian Kevin Boyd who will link up with the team at a later date, the outfit will hope that Lithuanian import Edgar ProtĨenko can shine instead. Likewise, the Stars will rely on experienced defenceman Richie Thornton, blue liner Ben Davison and young ‘D’ man James Hellens to remain strong and skilled to allow Billingham the best chance of success in this encounter. Similarly, Solihull will look to the core of last season’s roster to create problems for Billingham’s defensive unit with skilful Swedish import Niklas Ottosson, left winger Josh Bruce and experienced forward Joe Henry amongst some of the Barons greatest offensive threats.

Often hard fought and fierce, this fixture is likely to be another fantastic contest which will allow Billingham the chance of redemption against a side they struggled against last season.

Whitley Warriors have today announced the re-signing of young forwards Jamie Ord, Anthony Wetherell and Ross Douglass. Last season, seventeen-year-old Ord gained a great deal of ice time with the Warriors, grabbing a goal and an assist in twenty five league games, and he will therefore look to continue his development with the club this season. Meanwhile, featuring on five occasions for the Warriors in his most recent campaign, Wetherell primarily iced for Whitley Renegades in the Under 20s league, notching nine points in nine games for the outfit. A promising young forward, Wetherell will again set out to feature in Whitley’s league campaign this season. Last but not least, Douglass also returns to David Longstaff’s line-up having played in seventeen of Whitley’s league fixtures last season besides captaining the Renegades for whom he was able to snatch two assists in eight league games. Another important youngster, Douglass will aim for more ice time with the Warriors this coming season.

Whitley Warriors have announced the re-signing of forward Shaun Kippin who returns for a fourth consecutive season at the club. After playing junior ice hockey at both Sunderland and Whitley, Kippin made his debut with the Warriors during their 2002-03 campaign whilst primarily playing for the Tomahawks and the Braves. Continuing to ice for the Warriors for a further three seasons, Kippin took time out of the sport before returning to Whitley’s line-up in the season that followed. Remaining with the Warriors until September 2012, Kippin then switched to NIHL 2 outfit Deeside Dragons where he racked up a total of ninety points in fifty one league games. Returning to Whitley in 2015, Kippin has since fulfilled the role of alternate captain at the club and, in his most recent campaign, tallied eighteen goals and twenty one assists in thirty three league games to finish as his team’s fourth highest points scorer. As an experienced and skilful leader, Kippin’s presence will be welcomed when he lines up with the Warriors again next month.

Similarly, Solway Sharks have re-signed a strong leader in Struan Tonnar who, making his debut with the Dumfries outfit in 2005, has been an important part of Solway’s line-up ever since. Fulfilling the role of alternate captain during the side’s 2014-15 campaign, Tonnar was then awarded the captaincy in the season which followed and notably led his side to silverware success in their 2016-17 treble-winning campaign. Accumulating twenty three points in thirty three league games last season, Tonnar helped his side achieve their fourth place finish and he will look to build on this with his team when they take to the ice next month.

Last but not least, Billingham Stars have re-signed defenceman Matthew Campbell who heads into his seventh consecutive season for the club. Having played for Whitley’s junior setup prior to joining the Stars’ Under 16s team in their 2011-12 campaign, Campbell made his senior debut with the side in the season that followed, achieving four points in five league games. Since then, Campbell has regularly featured on Billingham’s blue line, playing thirty two league games for the outfit last season in which he was able to chip in with two goals and four assists. Another important returnee, Campbell will be ready to take to the ice with the Stars when the season gets underway.

Billingham Stars have announced the return of defenceman Darren Stattersfield to their line-up. After starting out with Northern Stars’ Under 16s team in 2010, Stattersfield attended the Okanagan Hockey Academy in the UK between 2012 and 2015. Subsequent to this experience, the defenceman travelled to Canada where he iced for the Coldwater Falcons before joining London Lakers in the GMHL during their 2016-17 campaign. In the same season, the blue liner featured for Norwood Nemesis and Essa Stallions in the CPJHL and then signed for Solway Sharks on his return to Britain. After tallying seven assists in fourteen games across all competitions for the Dumfries outfit, Stattersfield opted for a move to Billingham last summer, achieving ten points in sixteen league games whilst also featuring for the Stars’ Under 20s team. Returning to the Teesside club for a second consecutive season, Stattersfield will bolster Billingham’s growing defensive unit.

Meanwhile, further to this morning’s announcement that forward Rick Bentham will play at the Dumfries Ice Bowl this coming season, Solway Sharks have tonight announced the re-signing of experienced defenceman Kyle Horne. Joining the Sharks last season, Horne contributed twenty three points in thirty two league games as well as proving highly effective on Solway’s blue line. Having first played in the BNL with Fife Flyers from 1999 to 2005, Horne then iced in the EPL with Slough Jets for two campaigns before playing ten seasons in the Elite League, first with Edinburgh Capitals and then the Flyers. With a wealth of experience to offer as a result, Horne is another excellent addition to the Sharks’ roster.

Billingham Stars have announced the return of backup netminder Mark Watson who is set for his eighth consecutive season at the Teesside club after achieving a save percentage of 88.7% in seventeen games last season. Having played ice hockey for both Newcastle Vipers’ and Whitley Warriors’ junior setups, Watson then went on to divide his 2010-11 campaign between Whitley Braves and the Northern Stars prior to the side’s merger with Billingham in the season that followed. Sharing netminding duties with fellow shot stopper James Flavell during the Stars’ league campaign and icing in the NIHL National Cup last season, Watson will continue to be an important part of Billingham’s roster when he takes his place between the pipes in his upcoming campaign.

Likewise, Solway Sharks have re-signed experienced defenceman and on-ice leader James Hutchinson who heads into his third consecutive season with the Dumfries outfit, having first iced for the side during their 2016-17 treble-winning campaign. Though playing just seventeen games for the Sharks last season through injury, alternate captain Hutchinson was still able to contribute five goals and seven assists to Solway’s league campaign. With a wealth of experience having played in both the Elite League and the EPL prior to signing for Solway in 2016, Hutchinson will again bring calm, composure and consistency to the Sharks’ blue line when he returns to the ice next month.

Photo Credit: IceHockeyMedia - Colin Lawson
Further to re-signing Hutchinson, Solway have also confirmed the return of forward Rick Bentham who joins their roster from Blackburn Hawks. Having previously iced with the Sharks in their 2014-15 campaign, Bentham achieved forty nine points in twenty four league games to finish the season as the team’s top points scorer. The forward then signed for the Hawks in what was an extremely successful season for Blackburn in which they were crowned NIHL North league and playoff champions. Returning to the Dumfries outfit in 2016, Bentham played three league games and two cup games for the Sharks, notching a total of five goals and two assists in that time, but he then switched back to the Hawks where he was able to achieve forty seven points in twenty league fixtures. Finishing as Blackburn’s top points scorer for two consecutive seasons, Bentham will add even more firepower to the Sharks’ line-up which is certainly shaping up to be formidable.

Whitley Warriors have announced the re-signings of skilled forwards Ryan Sample and Callum Watson. Making his debut for the Warriors during their 2002-03 campaign whilst primarily playing for Whitley Braves, Sample quickly progressed to the senior side, bringing speed and skill to Whitley’s line-up. Never one to shy away from a fight, Sample racked up the penalty minutes as much as the goals over the course of seven full seasons with the Warriors. Taking a break from the sport from 2011 to 2013, Sample played four games during Whitley’s 2013-14 campaign but he did not ice with the side again until last season. Achieving seven points in fourteen league games, Sample returned to the ice in style with two goals and an assist against Telford Tigers in October. A diligent and dexterous forward, Sample is another welcome addition to David Longstaff’s line-up.

Photo Credit: IceHockeyMedia - Colin Lawson
Likewise, long-serving Warrior Watson will also bring a great deal of skill to Whitley’s roster as he heads into his thirteenth consecutive season at Hillheads, having first iced for the side during their 2006-07 campaign. Since then, Watson has demonstrated his goal scoring prowess and shown himself to be a fantastic offensive threat on the ice, accumulating three hundred and nine points over the course of two hundred and sixty seven league games. Tallying five goals and six assists in his most recent campaign for the club after missing out on several games last season, Watson will no doubt build on this contribution next month to show what he is capable of when he takes to the ice with the Warriors once again.

Photo Credit: IceHockeyMedia - Colin Lawson
Meanwhile, Solway Sharks have secured the services of forward and top points scorer Iain Bowie who re-signs for a second consecutive campaign after achieving twenty six goals and thirty one assists in thirty four league games for the Dumfries outfit last season. Taking a season away from the sport during Solway’s 2016-17 campaign, Bowie returned to the side last September and was immediately a force to be reckoned with, scoring four goals and notching two assists against Blackburn Hawks in the NIHL National Cup in the Sharks’ opening game of the season. With a capacity for finding the back of the net and wreaking havoc against his opposition’s defence, Bowie will look to at least repeat, if not better, last season’s points production when he laces up his skates again in September.

Photo Credit: IceHockeyMedia - Colin Lawson
Last but not least, Billingham Stars have re-signed defenceman Richie Thornton who heads into his eighth consecutive season for the Teesside outfit. Playing twenty one league games for the Stars last season, Thornton chipped in with a goal and five assists to help his team’s offensive efforts whilst remaining a reliable presence on Billingham’s blue line. With an ice hockey career spanning more than twenty seasons, Thornton is one of the Stars’ most experienced players, having first featured in an Eagles’ line-up which also included newly appointed Head Coach Tom Brown. Bringing knowledge and leadership to Billingham’s defence, Thornton is another valuable member of the Stars’ growing roster and will no doubt make a positive impact for his team when the season gets underway.

Whitley Warriors have tonight announced the signing of left winger Ben Campbell who makes his return to Hillheads after twelve seasons away from the club. Campbell progressed through Whitley’s junior setup to first appear for the Warriors during their 2002-03 campaign and he then went on to ice for the side for a further three seasons, accumulating thirty eight points in forty two league games. In 2006, Campbell opted to play for Newcastle Vipers and featured for both their Elite League and ENL outfits, remaining at the club for four seasons before icing for Guildford Flames in the EPL alongside Whitley’s current player-coach, David Longstaff. Over the course of eight seasons with the Flames, Campbell accomplished three hundred and ten points in three hundred and ninety one league games and he will therefore bring a great deal of skill and creativity to Whitley’s line-up when he makes a welcome return to the Warriors’ roster next month.

Billingham Stars have continued to add to their roster over the last two days with the re-signing of forwards Michael Bowman and James Moss.

Photo Credit: IceHockeyMedia - Colin Lawson
As one of Billingham’s most experienced players, Bowman started out with Sunderland Chiefs in 1996 where he remained for three seasons before icing for Hull and Newcastle in the BNL. In 2004, Bowman divided his campaign between EPL outfits Peterborough Phantoms and Chelmsford Chieftains ahead of signing for Slough Jets where he played for six seasons, tallying one hundred and sixty six points in two hundred and sixty games. A season with Bracknell Bees during their 2011-12 campaign then saw Bowman achieve twenty points from fifty league games prior to his return to Teesside. Having fulfilled the role of player-coach for the Stars between September 2013 and March 2018, Bowman now heads into his seventh season at Billingham after notching twenty three points in twenty eight league games in his most recent outing with the club. An influential forward, Bowman will look to make a positive impact for his team when he returns to the ice for the Stars next month.

Meanwhile, Moss heads into his eighth season at Billingham and, like many of his teammates, he has iced for the side since the club’s merger with the Northern Stars in 2011. Having experienced the junior setups of Billingham Bombers, Newcastle Vipers and Whitley Warriors prior to playing for the Stars, Moss is one of the Teesside club’s most skilled forwards and finished his 2017-18 campaign as his team’s fourth highest points scorer with ten goals and twenty two assists in twenty nine league games. A valued member of Billingham’s offensive corps, Moss will once again look to exhibit his skill to provide the Stars with the best chance of success this coming season.

Whitley Warriors have today announced the re-signing of long-serving forward DJ Good and the return of defenceman Lawson Glasby. Heading into his thirteenth consecutive season for the Hillheads outfit, Good made his first appearance for the Warriors in 1999 and went on to feature for the side for a further four seasons, dividing his time between Whitley’s senior team and their junior setup before moving away to study. Making the switch to the SNL to play for Edinburgh Capitals for three years as a result, Good returned to Whitley in 2006 and has been one of the team’s most skilled forwards ever since, tallying over forty points for the Warriors during their 2011-12 and 2012-13 campaigns whilst fulfilling leadership roles at the club. Having notched seventeen points in thirty one games last season, Good will build on his contribution to Whitley’s offensive efforts during his upcoming campaign and will undoubtedly trouble opposition with his skill once again.

Photo Credit: IceHockeyMedia – Ian Hanlon
By comparison, ‘D’ man Glasby returns to Whitley Warriors after studying in America last season. Playing for Clarkson University in Division Two of the American Collegiate Hockey Association during his time in the United States, Glasby notched four assists in thirteen games whilst gaining valuable ice time to build his experience in the sport. Looking to slot back into Whitley’s roster, Glasby will be faced with a very different NIHL North in September, having yet to play in the league since recent changes in British ice hockey.

Photo Credit: IceHockeyMedia - Colin Lawson
Meanwhile, Billingham Stars have confirmed that blue liner Ben Davison will return for an eighth consecutive season on Teesside having chipped in with three goals and six assists in thirty league games for the club last season. After starting out with Billingham’s junior setup, Davison made two appearances with the Bombers during their 2006-07 season before embarking on his first senior campaign for the Teesside outfit two seasons later. Like many of Billingham’s players who wanted to continue to play ice hockey during the refurbishment of The Forum, Davison featured for Whitley Warriors but found that he was able to gain more ice time with the Braves in England’s Under 18s league. A move to the Northern Stars in the season that followed allowed the ‘D’ man to ice on a more regular basis in the ENL and it was after this campaign that he was able to return to The Forum where he has played ever since. A reliable and consistent member of Billingham’s defensive unit, Davison will surely shine again for the side when he takes to the ice next month.
