It has this week been announced that Whitley Warriors’ player-coach David Longstaff has committed to another season at the Hillheads club alongside assistant coach Dave Holland who will also fulfil the role of general manager. Having just completed his second season with Whitley Warriors, Longstaff has worked with bench coach Holland since making his return to Whitley Bay in 2015, guiding his side to a second place finish and a playoff semi-final before more recently finishing in fifth place, just short of a playoff spot. Now the mainstay of the club, Longstaff will work with Holland to recruit players ahead of the Warriors’ next campaign as the duo look to continue the club’s development of junior players whilst building on the progress made by Whitley Warriors in recent seasons. Speaking to NIHL Northern Trio, Longstaff shared: “I’m returning as player-coach as I think we’ll lose some of the older players so I’ll be on the ice influencing things. Next season, we’ll be trying to get a younger and faster team as I think we really missed that this season.”
