‘Fill The Rink For Frankie’ a roaring success

Aiming to raise funds for three-year old Frankie Sherwood, who requires £550,000 for potentially lifesaving antibody treatment in America, having been diagnosed with Neuroblastoma in May 2015, local rivals Whitley Warriors and Billingham Stars united to ‘Fill The Rink For Frankie’.

Hoping to raise a large sum of money to contribute to Frankie’s treatment in the USA, a great deal of generosity was shown by the ice hockey community who donated via a bucket collection at Whitley Bay Ice Rink on Sunday. In addition to this collection, Star Ben Davison donated £5 for every goal scored, as well as £1 for every share of his post on social media, whilst netminder Richie Lawson pledged £2 for every save he made during the game. In total, the duo raised £293, whilst fan Mitchell Turnbull contributed £1 for every save made by Lawson to increase this amount to £351. Further to this, several online donations were made by ice hockey players and fans alike due to the fantastic endorsement of this event and both teams were willing to be photographed with fans after the final buzzer for a £5 donation which was a great success.

Organising the event alongside Warrior Andre Payette, Whitley fan Rob Potter told NIHL Northern Trio: “£2684.53 was the official figure generated by this campaign, then if you add all the online donations you’re looking around the £3000 mark. It’s absolutely amazing and thanks so much to everybody who contributed.” For fans travelling to The Forum next weekend to watch Billingham Stars play host to Whitley Warriors in the NIHL North Cup on Saturday, there will be another bucket collection on Teesside as the Stars join the Warriors in their campaign to help Frankie edge towards his target of £550,000.
